The Sony Xperia A has emerged as a new 5-inch smartphone from Sony, having been submitted to the FCC for approval.
All devices have to pass through the Federal Communications Commission before being approved for release in the US, so the appearance of the Sony Xperia A here is the next best thing to an official confirmation from Sony itself.
The Sony Xperia A appears in the listing with documentation for the SO-04E on Japan’s NTT Docomo network, and there’s an unusually extensive amount of information on the device’s specs – not to mention a number of images of the phone.
Externally the Sony Xperia A looks to sport the same minimalistic oblong slab design as the Sony Xperia Z. It has protective covers on its external ports, suggesting that it too will be water and dust resistant, and it has the same side-mounted metallic power button.
As for specs, we’re looking at a 5-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera (which would appear to be the same as the Xperia Z’s), and 16GB of internal storage.
Perhaps the most interesting specification is the presence of a removable 2,300mAh battery, which is a change from the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL‘s sealed power unit.
NTT Docomo is set to reveal its next batch of handsets in Japan on May 15, so we wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more about the Sony Xperia A then.
