Sony unveils 1TB PS4

Sony has officially confirmed the existence of the new 1TB PS4 console model.

At the beginning of June, an FCC filing revealed the existence of a new model of the PlayStation 4 games console. This time, according to the filing, the console would have 1TB of storage on board – that’s double the launch model’s capacity.

Now Sony has officially announced the new 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition.

According to the official blog post on the matter, the upgraded console will launch “in select Europe and PAL territories from 15th July.”

The announcement follows a similar reveal from Microsoft, which announced a new 1TB model of the Xbox One ahead of the recent E3 show. However, Microsoft’s new model also featured a reworked controller with a new 3.5mm headphone jack.

From the scant information Sony has provided, the increased HDD capacity is the only addition to its PS4 console. But then, with a healthy lead over Microsoft this console generation, Sony might argue that it got its hardware spot on from the off.

Sony hasn’t provided any pricing information for the new 1TB PS4, but it says to check with local retailers. We’ve had a quick scan and it hasn’t cropped up on the likes of Amazon and Game as yet.

The new 1TB Xbox One commands a £50 premium over the standard 500GB model, so we’d expect a similar difference with the PS4.
