Sony To Sell First OLED TV In 2007

The latest pretender to the title of 'LCD and Plasma Successor'.

While you may have noticed the proliferation of OLED displays into Sony’s MP3 players (noteably the K5 and K3 ) ultimately the company has much loftier ambitions for this technology…

Full size high definition TV and monitor panels are Sony’s definitive plans and now it has been announced that we will see the first before the end of the year.

At just 11 inches and featuring a 1024 x 600 native resolution this OLED TV is probably not the show stopping device that everyone had imagined, especially since it is also expected to cost many times the price of a similarly sized LCD. That said OLED is a remarkable beast and amongst the aces up its sleeve are a microscopically thin 3mm screen, near 180 degree viewing angle, 8bit RGB colour gamut (that’s eight bits per channel: R, G and B) and a mind blowing 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio!

Oh yeah. Now I’ve got your attention…

Similar offerings from other manufacturers won’t be far behind and just one thought keeps racing through my head: ”Pimp My Kitchen!”

”’Note:”’ The picture above (courtesy of Watch Impress) is a prototype, so this is just to show off the screen itself. I doubt very much this folding paper design will be used – after all what would be the point in producing something so thin then making its stand so fat?
