Sony PS4 DualShock 4 controller confirmed with touchpad front panel

Landing alongside the newly unveiled PS4 console, Sony has revealed that the repeatedly leaked PS4 controller will feature a new touchpad front panel interface.

Dubbed the DualShock 4, the new PS4 controller is said to feature “enhanced rumble capabilities” alongside a ‘Share’ button which will allow users to upload and share 10-second in-game recording, whilst an integrated headphone port and a light bar, which the Japanese manufacturer has said will offer a “simpler, more friendly way to identify players,” will also feauture.

Despite this flurry of new controller based features, the DualShock 4 PS4 controller’s key selling point is set to be the handset’s inbuilt touchpanel, akin to that found on the rear of PS Vita portable games console.

Offering multi-finger touch capabilities, the new DualShock 4 hosted touchpanel will offer gamers a new input method for use within a broad range of in-game and system navigational situations, with more detailed, precise movements and gesture-based controls set to be made available.

Further enhancing the upcoming console’s gaming abilities, the PS4 will be paired with a new dual-camera peripheral that will work alongside the DualShock 4 PS4 controller to provide more immersive, natural gaming experiences that ensure “the gamer is the focal point.”

Tracking the 3D position of the DualShock 4 PS4 controller, the new stereo camera, which is an advancement on the current PS3 compatible PlayStation Eye, will communicate with the light bar affixed to the top of the reimagined controller, offering a combination of PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect style motion gaming options.

With the new PS4 DualShock 4 controller set to be paired with the newly unveiled PS4 console, Sony earlier this evening announced that the “every facet of PlayStation will continue to become more powerful,” with “the processing power of the console an exponential leap over its predecessors.”

With the PS4 adopting PC architecture for added grunt with improved connectivity options and what is likely to be a more wallet friendly price tag, Sony has revealed that the PS4 will play host to 8GB of RAM alongside an x86 CPU and separate, PC spec GPU.

Do you think the new touchpad adorned DualShock 4 controller will enhance the PS4 gaming experience or is it little more than a gimmick? Let us know via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
