Sony NEX-3N officially launched

The Sony NEX-3N has been officially unveiled as the smallest and lightest interchangeable-lens camera with an APS-C sensor.

The Sony NEX-3N will take its place as the entry point to the NEX range of mirrorless cameras.

It sports a 16.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor, and maximum sensitivity has been boosted to ISO 16000.

Of course, you also get the ability to mount any of the existing NEX-range lenses. Without a lens attached it weighs a mere 210 grams.

Around back there’s a 3-inch LCD display that can be tilted through 180 degrees, while on top of the body there’s a pop-up flash.

As revealed when images of the Sony NEX-3N were leaked onto the internet yesterday, there’s also a new zoom lever around the camera’s shutter button. Attach a compatible power zoom lens and you’ll be able to control the optical zoom level as you would a standard point and shoot camera. It can also be used to adjust digital zoom if you’re not using a power zoom lens.

As this is intended to be an entry point into serious photography, there’s an intriguing new software feature called Auto Object Framing. This judges the composition of a shot – how many people, whether an object is moving, whether you’re after a macro shot – and automatically crops the picture accordingly.

The idea is to grant more professional-looking results with minimal effort.

Sony claims that the Sony NEX-3N is the first NEX camera to support ‘Triluminos Colour.’ This apparently means that you’ll get dramatically boosted colour depth when viewing images and videos back on a compatible Bravia TV.

The Sony NEX-3N will be available in Europe from March. No pricing information has been revealed as yet.
