Sony leaps on Pokémon Go bandwagon with aggressive return to mobile

Sony has once again decided to go big on mobile gaming, in the hopes of replicating the success of Pokémon Go.

CEO Kaz Hirai says the girl is “aggressively getting into” the sector and called the move “quite a shift” from the current console focus.

Hirai also said the presence of augmented and mixed reality gaming experiences could “lift all boats” for the video game industry.

Speaking to the FT, he said: “[Mobile gaming] is something we are aggressively getting into. It’s quite a shift from being just a console-based business to being on mobile phones as well.

Pokémon Go is a real game-changer. I’m very interested in the fact that it has the potential to really change the way people move, literally(/PULLQUOTE).”

From the archives: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review from 2011

Sony, of course has previous in this department. Its last big smartphone gaming effort centred around the phone-meets-PSP Xperia Play, which featured a slide-out game pad.

The company has also sought to use its latest Xperia smartphones as vessels for PS4 Remote Play.

While these efforts haven’t exactly proved fruitful for Sony thus far, it’ll be interesting to see what the firm comes up with with the renewed effort.

Is Sony looking to develop new gaming experiences in house, or will we see more gaming centric handsets?

It’s possible we’ll hear more at the PlayStation Meeting event this week, where the firm is expected to reveal the PlayStation Neo and a new slimline PS4.
