Sony “investigating” USB-C for future Xperia smartphones

Sony is considering including USB-C ports on future smartphones, a new report reveals.

According to FocusTaiwan, the company is having “internal discussions” on whether to adopt the new connection tech.

USB-C is a new standard for mobile connections, and has already cropped up on a number of devices, including several smartphones, a flash drive, and Apple’s new MacBook.

Of course we’re investigating [USB-C],” said Sony program manager Takeshi Nitta, as quoted in the report.

Nitta explained that the industry “still needs more time” to adopt USB-C over current standards like USB 2.0, 3.0, and Micro USB.

He also revealed that Sony is keen to achieve “thinner and lighter smartphone designs.” According to Nitta, they can see more success in slimming down devices by reducing the thickness of camera modules and displays, at least in the short term.

While the USB-C has yet to see widespread adoption, it’s quickly gaining momentum in the mobile world.

There are rumours that Apple might include USB-C on the much-rumoured, but as yet unannounced, iPhone 6S handset, tipped for launch this September.

Google also backs USB-C, recently revealing that the company is “heavily involved in creating a new USB Type C standard.”

This is the first we’ve heard of Sony working on the standard, so it’s not clear whether USB-C will actually make it to a handset.
