Long overdue but worth the wait...?
Nothing official yet, but Sony looks set to drop a whole lotta PMP love on the Chinese (and hopefully us too, please!).
Subscription site Nikki.net has the scoop on the ‘PMX-M70’ (above) while i4U has dirt on the ‘PMX-U50’ (below).
The former features a large 4.3in 480 x 272 pixel display and will be offered in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB configurations. Format support is good since it handles Mpeg4 and AVI while MP3 and WMA audio files will pose no problem. Interestingly however no mention is made of ATRAC…
Elsewhere integrated speakers, an FM tuner, audio encoding, a photo viewer, TV out and direct video encoding are featured while battery life is excellent at five hours for video and 20 hours for audio. The final icing on the cake is a pocket friendly thickness of just 12.7mm and a 129g weight.
As for the U50 it certainly doesn’t have the same Wow Factor at the M70 and its 2.4in screen is no larger than a current gen iPod but there is an FM tuner, integrated speakers, voice recorder and – happily – it does away with SonicStage in favour of drag and drop whilst also dropping ATRAC support (a sign of things to come?). Battery life is less impressive at three hours for video and 12 hours for audio while capacities range from 512MB to 4GB.
On the plus side at just 6.8mm thick at its thinnest point (though watch out for those child bearing speaker hips), the U50 is remarkably svelte.
No release dates or pricing but I’m hoping they do make it to the global market as they appear capable of shaking things up a bit. This is a good thing since Apple doesn’t seem to want to update the iPod range… ”’ever!”’
