Sony forms new mobile games company

Sony Computer Entertainment, soon to be Sony Interactive Entertainment, has announced the formation of a new company dedicated to making mobile games.

ForwardWorks Corporation will focus on bringing PlayStation IP to iOS and Android when it commences operation on April 1.

“ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles and its gaming characters as well as the knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise which was acquired over the years with PlayStation business to provide gaming application optimised for smart devices including smartphones,” reads the company’s statement on the matter.

Curiously, Sony says that ForwardWorks will be focussed on bringing such mobile games to users in “Japan and Asia,” so we may not see the fruits of their efforts here in the West.

Which is a shame, because Sony appears set to buck the mobile gaming trend and provide “full-fledged game titles” to smartphone users.

Of course, Sony has already dabbled with mobile gaming in the form of the failed PlayStation Mobile initiative, which worked with certain Android devices as well as its PS Vita handheld. It closed in 2015. The creation of a dedicated company and a cross-platform focus suggests that it may have more success this time around.

Sony’s move follows on from Nintendo’s own recent high-profile entry to the mobile game market. Miitomo may be more of a social network app than a true game, but it promises to shepherd in a new era for the famous company.

Nintendo is planning to release as many as four mobile games over the coming months – its first for hardware it didn’t design itself.
