Sony explains current gen gaming headset compatibility for PS4, it’s not good

Sony has confirmed that the PS4 will only offer limited chat headset compatibility at launch with additional headsets supported through a later update.

Bluetooth and third party PS3 headsets won’t be fully compatible with the PS4 at launch, forcing gamers to use the mono chat headset included in the next-gen console’s box if they want to communicate with fellow gamers.

The details that Sony has outlined for its PS4 compatibility for current gen headsets is a little confusing, but they explain the PS4 will be pretty fussy.

Any Sony PULSE gaming headset owners will have to be patient and wait for a post-launch system update for the headset to work at all with the PS4.

Headsets that rely on Bluetooth for chat will not work at all with the PS4, even after the system update it seems.

The PS4 will support headset that relies on digital optical for game audio, but gamers won’t be able to use the chat functionality of these until after the update. This is the same for any USB chat headsets as well.

Microsoft’s next-gen console, the Xbox One also has a similar issue. The connection on the Xbox One Wireless Controller is completely different to that on the Xbox 360, and so any existing headsets aren’t compatible with the controller.

There is an adapter in the works that will make existing kit work with the Xbox One, but Microsoft hasn’t announced when this will become available. It will certainly be after the November 22 Xbox One release date.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 come with a headset in the box, and  those with Microsoft’s next-gen console can use Xbox One Kinect to talk to their Xbox Live friends if they so wish.

The PS4 release date has been scheduled for November 29 in the UK, with the update download date as yet unannounced.
