High specs all round.
Sony Ericsson’s popular P990 smartphone has done more rounds than your average fairground plastic horse so a long overdue update was certainly on the cards, as was a swanky new 3.2MP candybar shooter.
Pleasing the suits first I’ll deal with the ‘P1’, the WiFi enabled P990 successor. Measuring just 106 x 55 x 17mm, it loses some serious bulk compared to its forebear and yet sports a 2.6in QVGA touchscreen, tilt button keyboard, hefty 3.2MP camera, FM radio, HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless. Yes, I’m impressed too…
160MB on onboard memory is also better than most while a Memory Stick Micro expansion slot (with 512MB bundled card) enables users to add to this. BlackBerry Connect and Push Email finish off a highly desirable feature list and the only downside is the wait until Q3 before the P1’s global launch.
If you prefer your phones a little less ‘smart’ however SE also has the T650 up its sleeve. While this candybar only offers a 1.9in QVGA screen it does match the P1 with a 3.2MP camera and measures a meagre 12.5mm deep.
As a spiritual successor to the T610 it further proves its worth with 3G connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP) and a Memory Stick Micro expansion slot. A multimedia player can also be taken as read in such a handset (yes, it’s there) while the main downside – like the P1 – is the Q3 arrival time.
I’ve never been a fan of SE handsets (it’s a styling/interface thing) but if you are then the specs are all here and I suggest you put off that planned contact upgrade a few more months…
