Everything that's wrong with designer labels and electronics.
It seems the recession doesn’t affect everyone…
Sony Ericsson has today launched its latest high end/low spec/extortionately priced fashion phone in the shape of the ‘Jalou’. Yes, this does sound half way between the hit and miss Chelsea footballer and equalling on/off rapper and will likely draw similar responses.
In terms of specifications for example, the clamshell Jalou is particularly dull sporting a 2in (”2in”) QVGA display, 3G, a 3.2MP fixed focus camera without flash, aGPS (for the US only), no WiFi, 100MB of native memory, a microSD expansion slot and FM radio. At just 84g it is extremely light, but the bulky 73 x 45 x 18.2mm dimensions mean it isn’t particularly pocket friendly.
Where it really gets obscene however is in the Dolce&Gabbana styling and its horrendously female stereotyping ad copy. Naturally the former comes in the shape of exclusive packaging (environment, anyone?) and accessories (three “silky rose satin bags”) and “gold accents” to “keep you connected in style”. Huh? Then there’s the preloaded D&G content which includes exclusive photography and video clips from Dolce&Gabbana’s women’s Autumn/Winter 2010 runway show plus custom themes and wallpapers. You’ll also get default access to a Dolce & Gabbana blog that sends the latest trends, news and gossip directly to the mobile phone via an RSS feed. Hmmmmmmmn.
As for the ad copy, did you know that 73mm is “shorter than your favourite lipstick” and 84g “will not weight your handbag down (yes that’s a ”stylish” typo)” while the “Jalou’s host of features will keep you entertained and looking fabulous.” Speaking of which, the 2in screen can turn into a mirror at the touch of a button so you can continually remind who was the idiot who bought this. Heck, at least you may not be alone when the “stunning advertising campaign” kicks off later in the year
If all this isn’t enough to put you off then you will (for some reason) be pleased to know the Jalou will launch in Q4. A non-blinged up version will also launch at the same time. Expect the former to cost the earth, the later to be close to an impulse buy on pre-pay.
Now please excuse me, I need to take a shower…
