Sony Drops Price of PSP

But only on the Core Pack.

It has long been rumoured that Sony has been planning an update to the PSP and while it denies such talk it has done the first thing every company does before the introduction of a new version: drop the price of the original!

Effective from tomorrow, prices of the PlayStation Portable (to give the device its full, and never used, name) Core Pack will fall from $199.99 to $169.99 (£85.98). The RRP of the two other PSP bundles – the Entertainment and Value Packs – remain unaffected, for now.

Sony says the motivation behind the move is to attract younger, cash strapped customers (ie teenagers/impoverished mums/impoverished teenage mums) by pushing the package closer to Nintendo’s DS Lite – which has been wiping the floor with its more powerful rival for years now. If you aren’t sure what comprises the Core Pack it is a PSP and its PSU and that’s it!

Unfortunately – though in typical Sony fashion – no info was revealed about the possibility of a UK/European price drop with the PSP Core currently retailing for north of £100 online.

Still, if you have just under £90 burning a hole in your pocket there is a certain portable, dare I say it ‘lite’, alternative that springs to mind…
