When the bracket was suggested as 499 to 599 euros praise be they have been shot down.
Before the launch of the Xbox 360 the price bluffs between Microsoft and Sony reached extraordinary levels. Well Gates’ minions have long shown their hand and while it looked as if the King of Proprietary had done the same thing yesterday it has now shunned such allegations.
The furore comes after George Fornay – VP of Sony France’s Computer Entertainment Division – appeared to name a 499 to 599 euro price bracket for the next generation console when interviewed by French radio show Europe 1. Fornay even went as far as to acknowledge the price was steep but alluded that it was inexpensive given the device’s Blu-ray playback capabilities.
Sadly (or perhaps positively, given the numbers mentioned) Sony has quickly moved to distance itself from these remarks. Company spokesman Nick Sharples stating, “At no point did he ever refer to a specific price for (the PS3). He was referring to a 500 dollar price that the interviewer had questioned to him, explaining the relative value of the PS3 console in relation to Blu-ray disc players on the high-end and consoles on the low-end.”
Ok, so let’s do a little Analysis 101 of our own on this follow up statement. Blu-ray disc players are expected to be 800 to 1,000 euros. The consoles he refers to ‘on the low end’ strongly suggest we can rule out the Xbox 360 meaning the others go for about 200 euros. Between 800 euros and 200 euros is 500 euros. It’ll place my bet somewhere around there. Thanks Nick 😉
