Sony could be set to announce its own 84-inch 4K TV

Word is out that Sony will be unveiling its own 84-inch 4K TV set at IFA 2012 next week. This would be the biggest mass market TV Sony has ever produced.

Earlier this very week we brought you the news of the LG UD 3D TV. As well as being a big old jumble of letters, this mammoth TV set will feature an 84-inch 4K screen. This means that as well as being rather large, the set will feature a so-called Ultra High Definition resolution of 3840×2160.

Now it appears as if Sony might be planning a very similar TV titan of its own. According to an unnamed source of CNET’s, the TV will feature an even sharper resolution of 4096×3072 – which is four times the number of pixels of a current 1080p Full HD TV set.

The new Sony TV will feature an edge-lit LCD panel, which means it should be very thin indeed. It’ll also have removable speakers, so those with a hefty home cinema set-up will be able to slim this giant of a goggle box down yet further.

As for how the set will look, the source describes “a reimagined retro-style appearance with a modern twist” – whatever that means.

If this is the same 80-inch 4K TV as was rumoured recently on BGR, then the set could well cost an eye-watering $30,000. That’s around £18,910 in UK money, and around £5,000 more than the aforementioned LG equivalent – although that figure was directly translated from its original South Korean pricing.

Either way, you’d better start saving those pennies if you want to join the super-sized UHD TV revolution.
