Sony announces first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs for early 2016

The first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases from Sony will not arrive before the year is out.

The entertainment and tech giant says discs will go on sale in early 2016, missing the the Blu-ray Disc Association’s late 2015 estimate.

As much as that may disappoint any early adopters who were hoping to jump on board, Sony did confirm which titles it would be rolling out first.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Hancock and Chappie will be among the new releases, alongside The Smurfs 2.

Pineapple Express will also join the line-up, although that seems a strange choice for a 4K upgrade given the visuals were never really that film’s selling point.

Other titles in line for a 4K disc release are Fury and Captain Philips. Meanwhile, classic titles such as Taxi Driver, Ghostbusters, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Leon are also in Sony’s 4K library and will likely be released in due course.

Sony has also announced that the new 4K Ultra HD releases will support high dynamic range and “next-generation immersive audio formats.”

The company’s announcement comes exactly 10 years after it authored the first Blu-ray movie.

Twentieth Century Fox was the first studio to announce its Ultra HD Blu-ray lineup back in September at IFA 2015. The studio will roll out X-Men: Days of Future Past, Life of Pi and Fantastic Four among others.
