Sony Adds Netflix and Cloud Storage, Expands Home Audio Line-Up

In a busy week for Sony, it launched a Netflix app for its newest connected TVs and Blu-ray players. The company also unveiled a cloud-based personal media storage service and, on the hardware side, Sony this week announced two new compact hi-fi docks as well as a high-end home cinema receiver.

The Netflix app for the subscription movie streaming service will join the likes of the BBC iPlayer on the Sony Entertainment Network portal. Sony says the app works on its Network Media Player and this year’s net-connected Bravia TVs and Blu-ray decks – but not older ones. Netflix, which costs £5.99 a month, is already available on the Sony PS3 as well as the Xbox 360, Wii; selected products from Samsung, LG, Apple and Panasonic, and various media streaming boxes.

Meanwhile, registered users of the Sony Entertainment Network are now entitled to a free 5GB of cloud storage space, called PlayMemories Online. The service replaces the Personal Space system. Sony will transfer any existing content over to the new platform. There is a free app for iOS or Android so that people can upload photos and video from their mobiles and access them on other connected devices.

Sony’s new compact hi-fi systems are the CMT-V75BTiP and CMT-V50iP. Due in June, both feature CD playback and a built-in dock for iPhone, iPod or iPad. They also feature what the manufacturer calls Magnetic Fluid damperless speakers, which it says remove distortion as well as making a more slimline design possible.
