Sony adds mobile payments for PlayStation Store

Sony has introduced mobile operator payments for transactions within the PlayStation Store and the Sony Entertainment Network.

Anyone making purchases on the Sony Entertainment Network or the PlayStation Store can now bill their expenditure to their mobile phone account.

Part of a new partnership with Boku, a mobile payments company, Sony customers can top up their PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network wallets using the mobile operator billing function.

Compatible with all major UK mobile network operators, Sony’s new mobile operating billing system can be activated on the Sony Entertainment Network Account Management website or via the PlayStation Store on the PS3.

Users will have to choose mobile as their payment option. They will then be asked for their mobile phone number and confirm by text the amount of their wallet top-up.

“We are always looking at new ways to give our customers more choice in terms of content, accessibility and payment methods, and are pleased to be able to offer the option of mobile operator billing, which are becoming more and more popular,” said Gordon Thornton, Vice President of Sony Network Entertainment Europe.

The top-up fee will be added to the next monthly mobile bill, or if on a PAYG tariff, the value will be deducted from their top-up credit.

“With an unprecedented amount of content now available, and new and easier ways to top-up the users account wallet, the online store delivers a convenient, visually compelling and easy to use destination to access and discover games, movies and TV episodes and more,” added Sony in a statement.

The latest addition to the PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network may be in preparation for the launch of its next-generation PS4 console.

It is suggested the PS4 release date will be announced at Gamescom on August 21, giving a more specific time frame than the loose “holidays 2013” given at launch.
