Slimline PSP On The Way

If you really don't want to buy a DS Lite, then hold out for the PSP 'Lite'...

In the world of gaming the last name Sony wants to hear is ‘Nintendo’. With its PSP long overshadowed by the DS & subsequent DS Lite and PS3 losing out 5:1 to the Wii it needs to do something drastic…

According to gaming guru’s Kotaku this will lead to the imminent arrival of the PSP ‘Lite’, Sony’s attempt to catch up with Nintendo’s skinnier, more lightweight counterpart. Of course Sony won’t be calling a revamped PSP the ‘Lite’ but this is essentially what it is: same console underneath, post personal trainer.

In fact, that last statement isn’t completely true for while the PSP v1.1 will churn out the same horsepower as the current model and use the same past and future games, it will feature an all new LED screen which is responsible for much of the weight loss and also a vast improvement in battery life (web rumour suggests potentially 4x more). On top of this there will be 8GB of internal flash memory for storage and a faster UMD drive to reduce load times.

Kotaku claims at this stage Sony is still weighing up whether to integrate a camera and go with either a gloss or matt black finish (matt: less scratches/fingerprints) but the broad strokes are in place.

Street price for this Kate Bosworth-esque transformation? Sub $170 apparently with manufacturing scheduled to begin in the next few weeks in time for an official unveiling at E3 in July. Does Kotaku have all this stuff nailed down? For Sony’s sake I hope so…
