Sky 3D channel to show 3D Formula 1 coverage

Sky 3D customers will soon be able to watch live 3D Formula 1 coverage, with the broadcaster confirming the third pre-season test from the Circuit de Catalunya will be getting the extra-dimensional treatment.

Taking place from February 28 to March 3, Sky Sports 3D will bring viewers live 3D F1 coverage every day of the third test, presented by Simon Lazenby with commentary from David Croft and additional special guests.

This will be the first time Formula 1 has been broadcast in 3D on Sky, after the broadcaster began airing Formula 1 for the first time last year on the dedicated Sky Sports Formula 1 HD channel.

“This is a special moment for Formula 1 fans and exactly the kind of innovation and access that Sky Sports F1 promised. 3D will show us the real challenges of the race track with added depth and perspective,” said Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle. “It will be a new immersive experience for viewers and I can’t wait to see what F1 action in 3D will reveal.”

The 3D coverage of the third test at Circuit de Catalunya will broadcast daily from 2pm live, whilst the Sky Sports F1 HD channel will bring daily coverage, Ted’s Test Notebook features from Ted Kravitz and a highlights programme at 9pm.

“This is groundbreaking. We’re as excited as the next fan to see what Formula 1 will look like in 3D,” said Executive Producer of Sky Sport F1 HD Martin Turner. “It’s uncharted territory, but this is a big opportunity to experiment and innovate, and we’re grateful to Formula One Management for working with us on this.”

Formula 1 will take the number of sports shown in 3D by Sky to a total of 14, including football and golf.

“It’s proved a huge success with other sports, and now for the first time ever, 3D will bring TV viewers a new perspective on Formula 1,” said Sky 3D Director John Cassy. “This cements our commitment to innovation and investment in 3D, and it’s the latest first by Sky following our recent work on Galapagos with Sir David Attenborough.”

“As the leading 3D pioneer, Sky is delighted to be able to ring this entirely new experience to Sky 3D viewers and F1 fans.”

Are you an avid F1 fan? Will 3D help enhance your Formula 1 viewing experiences or do you see the extra-dimensional content as little more than a passing gimmick? Share your thoughts on the matter with us via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
