Siri enhanced on iPhone 5 and iOS 6, can launch apps, update Facebook and more

Siri was already one of the more comprehensive voice-controlled ‘virtual assistants’ available, but as expected it has gotten even better for the iPhone 5’s release. How, you might ask? Well, for one thing it will now give you sports scores and rankings – though naturally you may not always be happy with the results, so don’t smash your new iPhone 5 in a fit of rage, it’s only the messenger.

Potential damage aside, this is a really neat feature for sports fans everywhere, especially those who might have their hands full yet desperately need on the dot confirmation of how the latest match went.

Apparently, Siri has also learned more about movies, though this wasn’t demonstrated effectively at the launch. Still, if it can’t answer your question, it’s likely to take you to a site that will. And that’s two major entertainment categories where the new Siri is better.

Perhaps the single largest (geekiest) new ability for iOS 6’s Siri is that you can now launch apps using it. Imagine a scenario where you use Siri to open a voice-controlled word processor with something like Dragon Naturally Speaking – we’d never need hands again!

Another Siri feature that’s likely to see a lot of use is direct-to-Facebook wall posting. Basically, Apple’s clever little assistant will let you update your status on the most popular social network with a single “post” command. Handy – or perhaps essential – for social media addicts. Now all it needs is Twitter support.
