Shenmue 3 breezes past $2m Kickstarter goal in under 24 hours

Earlier today, we reported that Shenmue 3 had been launched on Kickstarter. Needless to say, it’s done quite well.

So well, in fact, that it’s smashed right through its $2 million (£1.28m) backing target in less than 24 hours.

At the time of writing, more than $2.46 million (£1.57m) in funding has been pledged towards the production of the game.

With 31 days to go, the game will probably have no issue reaching its maximum stretch goal of $4 million (£2.56m).

If you’re scratching your head wondering what the hell Shenmue is, listen up.

Shenmue, which first launched in 1999, was a Sega game that effectively coined the “open city” genre. You may be familiar with its legacy a la Grand Theft Auto.

Shenmue 2 was the equally successful follow-on to the title, and landed on Dreamcast and Xbox back in 2001, and entrenched the series as a cult hit.

Shenmue 3 is neither a remake nor a spin-off of the original series; it’s actually a direct sequel to Shenmue 2.

It’s expected that the new title will adopt a similarly free-roaming and open-world approach to its predecessors.
