Seagate Unveils ‘Fastest, Greenest’ HDD

Enterprises and stupidly wealthy gamers prepare to start drooling...

SSDs are getting cheaper and faster with every generation but that doesn’t mean the traditional HDD is out of it yet, especially judging by this monster…

Bursting out of the gates and terrifying all before it today is the Seagate Savvio 15K.2 a screaming 15,000rpm 2.5in model targeting the enterprise space and completely nuts / minted gamer.

Running a SAS 2.0 interface running at 6Gbps speeds, the Savvio 15K.2 utilises larger topologies, 100 per cent faster data throughput and higher internal strength over greater distances meaning its massively scalable and RAID friendly. Seagate even claims the drive can provide up to 115 per cent greater system-level performance compared to 3.5in based service-class units. Seek times? Just 2.9ms, while idle power consumption is just 5.8W. Impressive.

Capacities are naturally smaller than the norm as the performance level with Seagate offering the Savvio 15K.2 in 146GB and 73GB capacities.

Shipping from December, the Savvio 15K.2 line has yet to reveal its RRPs (probably better for the heart that way) but with models featuring SED expected during Q1 2009 it may be that the line will continue to fight the good fight against the tide of SSDs for some time to come…
