Seagate Delivers Fastest Ever 1TB HDD

Use of SAS leads to claims of a 135% performance boost over SATA.

Despite its love / hate relationship with SSD, storage giant Seagate tends be among the most progressive of companies and here are two more examples why…

In a joint announcement, the company has announced the one terabyte enterprise class ‘Barracuda ES.2’ with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface (below) and the ‘Cheetah 15K.6 FDE’ (Full Disk Encryption) – two lines offering important world firsts.

The former marks the arrival of the first 1TB HDD to employ this ultra fast interface and Seagate is claiming applications addressing rich media content and collaborative applications, like email, can benefit from the average 135% performance boost over SATA-interface drives. Furthermore, SAS offers greater levels of data integrity and performance for business-critical and nearline enterprise environments for this big business targeted product.

500GB and 750GB models SAS models will also be available and all deliver 7,200rpm spin speeds and average seek times of just 8.5ms.

As for the Cheetah’s, they become the world’s first self-encrypting HDDs, including all data on the drive (hence the FDE tag). Unlike other products to date, the encryption engine is in the drive’s controller ASIC, meaning encryption is transparently fast and, in the case of a data centre, performance automatically scales with every drive added to it.

Furthermore, self-encryption in the Cheetah FDEs requires no change to the OS, applications or databases while ‘Key-Erase’ technology ships with them enabling secure removal of data, whether for re-purposing, returning for service, or disposal.

As is typical with Seagate, no pricing or release information was given away but – like you – we’re hoping both our pockets and patience won’t be tested too far…
