Seagate builds the world’s first 60TB SSD
Seagate has caused a bit of a stir at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, California by unveiling a new 60TB SSD (yes, you read that right).
The new device is the largest capacity drive of its kind in the world, and has four times the storage space of the largest SSD currently available: Samsung’s PM1633a.
Seagate is showing off the drive at the conference in what the company is calling a ‘technology demonstration’ – suggesting the monster isn’t quite ready for release just yet. In fact, the company isn’t planning to unleash it until sometime in 2017.

When it does eventually launch, you won’t be able to pick one up on Amazon. The SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drive, which fits into a standard enterprise hard disk drive 3.5-inch storage slot, is being marketed at data centres who require vast amounts of storage space.
What’s more, Seagate isn’t content to stop at 60TB, saying that it could eventually expand the the ‘flexible architecture’ used to build the drive into a 100TB model.
Pricing is also yet to be confirmed, but seeing as Samsung’s 15TB alternative went on sale for $10,000 earlier this month, we’re not expecting it to be cheap.
