SD Cards To Get Smart

The humble SD card could soon become a lot smarter thanks to
new standards being implemented by the SD Association.

Announcing a collaboration with GlobalPlatform, the new
smart SD and microSD cards will offer near-field communications (NFC)
technology which promises to convert your phone, tablet or laptop into an
electronic wallet.

Currently SD cards are used to store information such as
photos, films or documents but when these new standards are implemented, SD
cards could be used to securely store your bank account details, ID and even
music subscriptions to the likes of Spotify.

The SD card would need to be authorized and would be tied to
your particular device, or number of devices, making it tough to use it on any
other device if the card did get stolen. However should your card get lost, as SD cards are wont to do, then there could be problems if the information is not backed-up in the cloud.

“Standardized authentication services on microSD and
full-size SD memory cards would transform consumers’ mobile phones and CE
devices into electronic wallets carrying cashless currency and paperless
identification for use in making everyday purchases such as groceries or train
tickets, or in receiving customized subscription services like mobile
television,” a statement from the SD Association said.

While these services are certainly available elsewhere
through a combination of NFC and smartphone apps, the fact that 80 per cent of current phones
with removeable memory use the SD standard, this solution could prove very popular
among older phones without integrated NFC technology.
