Apple is to begin manufacturing a new product at its sapphire plant in the United States this month, according to reports, prompting speculation the Apple Watch is about to hit the production line.
Documents obtained by 9to5Mac appear to show that a new product using sapphire display technology is being built in August.
What’s more, the filings show this product actually falls under the classification of ‘jewellery.’
According to the documents, the product will feature a component known as ‘Sapphire 7116.20’ which pertains to “Articles Of Jewellry Of Precious Or Semiprecious Stones.”
Given it seems unlikely Apple is about to verge off into the world of necklaces, rings and earrings, the use of the word jewellery is likely to represent something stylish and worn on the owner’s person, i.e. the iWatch.
The unearthed documents show a letter from Apple to the U.S. Department of Commerce, dated July 2, requesting “expedited approval” for “an aggressive go-live timeline of August 2014.”
This lends credence to the suggestion the iWatch will be entering production this month or, given that we’re already at the back end of August, has already hit the line.
While today’s update seems rather tenuous, it stands to reason the iWatch would be built in August given the assumed plans to launch the wearable in October.
The sapphire display technology, which is also rumoured to sit within the iPhone 6 handsets set for launch in September, is set to give Apple’s gadgets a virtually scratch proof and shatter proof quality.
