SanDisk Makes Secure ‘Phone Home’ Flash Drives

Targeting SMBs, enterprises and over protective parents.

Thought you’d seen everything a memory key could do? Think again.

If you’re working/running a large corporation or simply verging on delusional paranoia SanDisk has shown that an old dog can learn some exceedingly cool new tricks. Called the ‘Cruzer Professional’ and ‘Cruzer Enterprise’ they take data security to whole new levels.

Like some existing solutions both drives feature hardware based 256bit AES encryption – an incredibly hard nut to crack, as well as Privacy Zones (configurable by the user on the Professional and 100 per cent privacy on the Enterprise without circumvention).

They then ramp things up a bit. Enter the password incorrectly 10x in a row and the Professional model erases all contents in the Privacy Zone while the Enterprise disables the entire drive. From here however the Enterprise edition goes seriously hardcore. It works with CMC (Central Management & Control) software – available from VARs and SanDisk partners – meaning it can be controlled remotely. This includes features such as password administration, central backup and restore and usage tracking and auditing. Even cooler however, is if you lose it…

The Enterprise drive can be programmed to ‘phone home’ meaning the next time it is connected to the Internet it will automatically login with CMC. Should the drive have been reported lost a command is issued to the drive to terminate. Nice.

What if said thief is clever however and – knowing this – deliberately keeps the computer they are using (and therefore the drive) offline? No problem: the drive can be configured to check for an Internet connection after a user defined period. If this elapses a warning message flashes up on the screen requesting a connection and if the user doesn’t comply then the drive terminates anyway. Privacilious.

So that’s your security well and truly handled and speed isn’t found wanting either. Both the Professional and Enterprise use ultra high quality materials meaning SanDisk quotes jet propelled 24MBps read times and 20MBps write. As for availability, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB models will be available by the end of the month with an 8GBer soon afterwards. Prices begin at just $54.99 for the Professional and $74.99 for the Enterprise.

Conspiracy theorists will have never slept so soundly in their lives…

”’PS”’ My thanks to Nimrod Reischenberg, SanDisk’s Head of Marketing for Enterprise Solutions, for a thorough and completely painless brief.
