Samsung Upgrades Its MiniDV & DVD Camcorders

Improved features and specs - what else did you expect?!

While Samsung recently corrected its surprising HD camcorder omission it hasn’t forgotten its bread and butter…

Two new SD ranges were announced today: the MiniDV VP-D37x and DVD based VP-DC17x while there is also a standalone headlining unit, the VP-DC575WB.

The compact D37x series (above right) is equipped with 800k pixel CCDs, high end zoom lenses and large 2.7in 112k pixel widescreen LCDs. Sammy’s ‘VOICE Plus’ technology is also a new feature added to all the company’s camcorders and enables users to narrate over pre-recorded footage using a unit’s microphone. The top of the range D375W also adds in an SD/MMC card slot and a USB2.0 port.

As for the DC17x line these are compatible with DVD-RW/-R/+RW/+R discs including dual layer variants and mimic the DC37x range with an 800k pixel CCD and 2.7in widescreen display. Optical zooms start at 26x on the entry level VP-DC575WB and jump to 34x for the mid and high DC171W, DC175WB and DC173. Voice Plus also makes its scheduled appearance.

As for the DC575WB (above left), this is the flagship of the models matching all their peak capabilities but coming with a one megapixel CCD and a sharp piano black finish.

I’d like to have more info on all these models, but this is all Samsung is releasing at present. Keeping up the vague tone, the company has also kept pricing and release details secret, but I expect they should appear this month with prices none too troubling for the average pocket.

”’Update:”’ They’re hitting shelves now 🙂
