Samsung Unveils Powerful New Omnia Series

Firms up Omnia 2, Pro, OmniaLITE and unveils the Jet...

So Samsung has gone all kinds of official on a whole new range of Omnia handsets…

The primary two models are devices we have seen leaked in recent days: the Omnia II (I8000 – left) and OmniaPRO B7610 (far right) while we also get a look at the ‘OmniaLITE B7300’ (right) for the first time. We also get a new handset charging into view: the ‘Jet’ (S8000 – far left).

Since I’m generally perverse let’s start at the end with the Jet. As the name implies this is a handset all about speed, in this case a rampaging 800MHz CPU. On top of this you’ll find a 3.1in AMOLED WVGA resistive touchscreen display, five megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash, HSDPA, aGPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP.

Video and audio codecs are also well catered for with the likes of DivX, Xvid and AAC but there’s no MKV, Ogg or Lossless. Furthermore, while you will find a well designed Webkit browser Samsung has gone for a custom OS on the Jet and my time at the launch event quickly showed it doesn’t measure up. Processor power is fine but when animations are jarring, scrolling painful and – clichéd as it may sound – I have to ask: why not just install Android?

I won’t dwell on the Omnia II and B7610 since I’ve gone through them each in some depth already via the links above and the leaks were spot on. All of which leads us to the OmniaLITE, a lower midrange Windows Mobile 6.1 touchscreen phone with 3in QWVGA resistive touchscreen, HSDPA, WiFi and 3MP camera. Happily aGPS also makes it across and while internal memory isn’t great at 256MB, a 32GB compatible microSD slot will see your storage needs clear.

No time frames were put upon these four new models but I’d be amazed if they didn’t turn up in shops within the next one or two months across a variety of networks. One thing does leave me baffled however: why drop the Omnia name from the i8910 HD just before launch? Why not just add it into the new family? Ho and very much, hum…
