New features include advanced face recognition, wide-angle lenses and HD video
We’ve already seen two new digital camera launch announcements from the CES show currently underway in Las Vegas. Andy, Riyad and Gordon are over there now (lucky buggers), but I’m still getting press releases from the camera companies about their new products, including a whole swath of announcements from Samsung.
Keen to build on its rapidly growing share of the camera market, Samsung has announced no less than five new models, sporting some advanced features and distinctive styling. A good example of both is the interesting ST10. My apologies for the terrible pictire, but this is all that’s currently available. Hopefully one of the lads will be able to snap a better shot on the Samsung stand.
This 9.0-megapixel ultra-compact features a 3.0-inch hVGA touch screen interface with a haptic feedback system, in other words it you can physically feel with your finger when you have pressed an on-screen “button”. As well as this it is equipped with a personal media player that can play MP3 music files, a new Digital Contents Management system that automatically organizes photos based on the date they were taken, their contents, colour or themes, and an advanced face recognition system. Samsung is claiming an industry first for this technology, but perhaps they’ve forgotten that most Casio cameras have had Friends and Family face recognition for over a year.
As well as this, the ST10 features Samsung’s new “Smart Scene Recognition” technology with 11 pre-settings such as Portrait, Night portrait, Macro, and Macro Colour. These settings can also be used when sorting through photos, making it quick and easy to find all the portrait, outdoor or macro images stored on the camera. It also has an Angle/Composition guide for those moments when you want someone else to take a photo of you in front of some scene. It overlays a template on the monitor so that they know exactly what type of picture you want.
The ST10 will be available from February priced at £179.
