Samsung UMPC Sequel Leaked & Upgrade Confirmed

Vista all round.

The UMPC format may so far have had a desirable models count of one but things might be improving slowly if Samsung’s latest efforts are anything to go by…

Making the most headlines is the Engadget scooped Q2, Sammy’s follow up to the moderately successful Q1. Big changes are a flatter appearance with split keyboard either side of the screen, a new 1,024 x 600 ‘WSVGA’ resolution that I didn’t even know existed and connectivity nirvana with wireless b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, HSDPA ”and” WiBro. Other adjustments include an as yet unspecified non-Intel CPU, a 1.3MP digital camera and VGA camera for video conferencing and fingerprint scanner.

Elsewhere the specs line up nicely with the company’s officially announced other UMPC: the ‘Q1P’ (above). Like the P the Q2 will come with a Vista OS, 7in touch screen, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 60GB HDD. That said, the Q1p has the older 800 x 480 resolution while the Q2 is unlikely to share the Q1p and Q1’s ageing Intel GMA900 integrated graphics option because 1. It won’t support Aero and 2. It won’t be running an Intel CPU. Could full Aero goodness be on the way…?

Obviously there’s no price or release date yet for the Q2 but the Q1p will be launching immediately Stateside for $1,299. Just two more generations and UMPCs should be ready for the mass market, just last year it looked like we’d need 100.
