Samsung to take on Apple Watch with…nothing at all

Samsung has switched up its strategy to face off against the Apple Watch by putting a stopper on wearable releases, for now at least.

Yes, the firm is jettisoning its modus operandi of releasing all the things, all the time, by taking a breather with smartwatches.

Speaking with the WSJ, Young-hee Lee, an executive VP at Samsung’s mobile marketing division, said: “We’ve been introducing more devices than anybody else. It’s time for us to pause.”

She added: “We want a more perfect product.”

Samsung has already flooded the nascent wearables market with a host of body-borne tech, including, but not limited to, the Gear S, the Gear 2, the Gear Fit, the Gear Live, and the Gear VR.

That’s typical of the South Korean tech giant across all of its markets, with the company’s product approach often seeming like a shotgun blast to Apple’s precision sniper.

It’s worth noting that Samsung isn’t cutting back its wearables division; the company merely plans to slow the releases down for a while.

The company’s research and development teams will likely remain hard at work on producing new products to strap to your wrist for years to come.

The most obvious reasoning behind the move is that Samsung wants to gauge the impact of the Apple Watch.

Due for release next month, the Apple Watch is expected to seriously disrupt – and boost – the wearables market, which makes launching any new wearables right now fairly risky.

By stepping back and seeing how consumers respond to the Apple Watch, Samsung might be better placed to launch a successful product later in the year.
