Samsung is working on a huge 18.4-inch Android tablet, report claims

Samsung is one of those prolific manufacturers that tries to fill every single niche.

That’s why we’re not that surprised about a new report that claims Samsung is working on an 18.4-inch tablet.

It’s a bewildering form factor, especially as the general industry consensus for tablet sizing has settled around 7-inches.

The enormous device, purported to be codenamed “Tahoe”, is expected to land running Android 5.1 Lollipop.

That probably means a launch isn’t too far off, because a new 2016 device will probably run Google’s upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Sammobile obtained the information about Tahoe exclusively, but didn’t state a source. As such, we can’t verify the story.

Nevertheless, here’s a list of specs claimed to be associated with the mysterious super-sized slate:

  • 18.4-inch LCD display
  • 1,920 x 1,080 pixel screen resolution
  • Octa-core 64-bit 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage
  • microSD slot
  • 5,700mAh battery
  • 8-megapixel primary camera
  • 2.1-megapixel secondary camera
  • 451.8 x 275.8 x 11.9mm

It’s a bit of a shame if the tablet does end up using a Full HD display.

Many of Samsung’s sub 6-inch smartphones use QHD screens, so there’s no reason why an 18.4-inch device shouldn’t benefit from an increased pixel count.

It’s not clear why exactly we need such a huge tablet, if one actually exists.

The most likely target customer for such a large slate would probably be enterprise customers.

Consumer tablet sales growth has slowed in recent times, so manufacturers are reportedly eyeing businesses to pump life back into the industry.

It’s that sort of thinking that’s fuelling the endless rumours that Apple is nearly ready to launch a 12-inch iPad Pro. That would still be dwarfed by the Tahoe, mind.
