Samsung Overwhelmed by Galaxy S3 Demand

Sometimes a new product can actually be too popular, and the latest example of that is Samsung.

The success of the Samsung Galaxy S3 appears to have caught its makers off guard and Samsung is reportedly still attempting to meet overwhelming demand for the new smartphone.

The Galaxy S3 is on track to become Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone. Reuters reports that sales are expected to top 10 million units in its first two months.

The news agency points out how sales have probably been boosted by the timing. There isn’t another Apple iPhone due for a little while and offerings from other competitors such as Motorola and Nokia have failed to generate much of a stir in comparison.

The new phone builds on the success of its direct predecessor as well as solid sales for other Galaxy products, such as the Galaxy Note, and there’s been a stream of glowing reviews for the S3.

However, a manufacturing problem accounted for a two-to-three-week delay in delivering the ‘pebble blue’ version of the phone in Europe, while those in the US who pre-ordered the S3 are also experiencing some delays, notes Reuters.

It’s said that just days before launch, half a million cases for the blue model were junked after being found to be unsatisfactory in quality.

Samsung is expected to make up for the shortfall in the July-September quarter of this year. Analysts at Barclays believe the company will ship up to 15 million units in that period.

The manufacturer told Reuters that component shortages have now been resolved and it is running at full capacity to meet demand. “It is simply that demand far exceeded our expectation; but that doesn’t mean we had set a very conservative demand forecast,” said a company spokesperson.
