Samsung Smart Cameras updated, Wi-Fi compacts galore

At CES 2013, Samsung has revealed a large range of new Smart Cameras. Available in a variety of sizes, colours, lens ranges and specs, all these Smart compacts share built-in Wi-Fi which, in conjunction with Samsung’s Smart Camera App for Android and iOS, lets you share your shots instantly.

Samsung is releasing six different models, the WB250F/WB200F, WB800F, WB30F, DV151F and ST150F.

Samsung WB250F/WB200F
Both the Samsung WB250F and its lesser cousin the Samsung WB200F offer decent optical performance, with an 18x optical zoom range and nice wide-angle lens (24-432mm at f3.2-f5.8) supporting a 14.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor (the WB200F knocks this down to a CCD sensor).

As such the new Samsung WB250F and WB200F combo doesn’t quite live up to the range of the 21x WB800F but is nonetheless a well-specced compact zoom pair. One of the nicest features for these compact shooters is a 3-inch touch screen on the rear, which complements their sparse physical controls.

The WB250F and WB200F will be available in white, black, red and gunmetal grey.

Samsung WB800F
With a class-leading 21x optical zoom and speedier, super wide-angle 23mm lens (23-483 at f2.8-f5.9) fronting a 16.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, the refreshed Samsung WB800F with Smart Camera 2 comes closest to matching the mighty Panasonic Lumix TZ40, which also offers Wi-Fi and a 3-inch rear touch screen.

The Samsung WB800F will be available in white, black and red.

Samsung WB30F
The WB30F is the smallest camera in the new Smart family that can still be called a super-zoom compact, offering a range of 24-240mm (10x optical) with a 16.2 megapixel CCD sensor.

Its range and 3-inch touch-screen are impressive considering it’s only 17mm thick. The Samsung WB30F comes in a variety of colours including black, white, red, purple and pink.

Samsung DV151F
The DV151F’s trick is that it’s a dual-view camera, complementing its rear 2.7-inch display with a tiny 1.5-inch screen on the front. We guess it’s a handy feature for self-portraits and the like, but it may be a little difficult to see much detail on a screen so small, and we would much rather have a single articulating display.

Other specs on this Samsung Smart Camera are decent but not outstanding, with a bright f2.5 25-125mm (5x) optical zoom range and that same 16.2 megapixel CCD sensor. On the other hand its body is made of aluminium, and it comes in five different colours including plum, lime green and light pink. Yummy.

Samsung ST150F
Last and least, the ST150F combines that same f2.5 25-125mm lens with yet another iteration of that 16MP sensor, and a 3-inch rear display. It comes in four colours including white (other colours are unconfirmed).

Samsung Smart Cameras Price and Availability
Pricing and UK availability for these Samsung Smart Cameras has not yet been confirmed, but we expect them fairly soon. If you fancy posting your snaps straight onto your favourite social networking sites, Samsung’s new range certainly seems to give you plenty of options.
