Samsung S9 (S9000) 4K LED 85-inch is world’s largest UHD TV

Samsung has officially launched the world’s largest 4K LED TV, the 85-inch S9 – or UN85S9 if you’re into your model numbers. This behemoth not only offers a stunning Retina-like resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, but also a unique “Timeless Gallery” frame and all the latest Samsung Smart TV features powered by a quad-core CPU.

While the Samsung 55-inch OLED TV F9500 still offers the best panel with its virtually infinite contrast and flawless viewing angles, it can’t match the size and resolution of the S9.

We’re seeing 4K, or UHD (Ultra High Definition) TVs from quite a few manufacturers at CES 2013 this year – including the Sony Bravia 64-inch 65X900A – suggesting that content to take advantage won’t be too far away. Regardless, Samsung’s upscaling using its integrated quad-core CPU will do a fine job of making 1080p or even 720p content look sharper than ever before.

Local dimming of individual LED backlight clusters combined with “Precision Black Pro” tech are on hand to boost the contrast ratio, and according to Samsung delivers this “deep, real blacks as well as pure vivacious whites”.

Not to be outdone too much by the images it delivers, the Samsung S9000’s audio is handled by subtly integrated 2.2 speakers (stereo speakers plus twin subwoofers) capable of 120W sound – apparently that’s around six times better than the average slim TV.

When it comes to Smart TV functionality, the Samsung S9 4K 85-inch LED TV sports a quad-core ARM Exynos processor, which is upgradeable to the latest and greatest if/when it gets out of date using Samsung’s modular Smart Evolution system. It supports the usual range of online and offline features, apps, and media playback, as well as voice and gesture control.

Just as stunning as the panel and features this 85-inch S9000 TV offers is it unique Timeless Gallery frame. Combined with a bezel so minimal it’s almost negligible, this makes Samsung’s largest 4K TV a modern piece of art – though to be honest, from a practical point of view we prefer a more traditional stand.

85-inch Samsung S9 4K LED TV Price and Release Date
No Samsung S9 UHD release date or price has been announced on either side of the Atlantic, but it’s a pretty safe bet that this flagship Samsung LED TV won’t be cheap. If it’s priced similarly to the Samsung 55-inch OLED TV F9500 it will be a tough call to know which one to get. As soon as we have any UK launch info you’ll be the first to know.
