Samsung’s next mid-range smartphones will be much more powerful

Samsung has announced a new mobile processor that could push future mid-range smartphones to the next level of performance.
The South Korean tech giant’s 14nm FinFET process was used in the construction of last year’s blazingly fast Exynos 7 chips, which powered the Samsung Galaxy S6 and family.
Now the company has revealed that it is bringing the same production standard to the middle of its range. The Exynos 7 Octa 7870 has been designed specifically for cheaper handsets.
“Consumers will experience enhanced performance as this is the first time a mobile application processor built on advanced 14nm process is available for these types of smart mobile devices,” said Samsung’s Ben K. Hur.
The Exynos 7870 features eight 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores, as well as an LTE Cat.6 2CA modem. It also supports 1080p 60fps video playback and display resolutions of up to 1920 × 1200.
Meanwhile, the chip’s image signal processor (ISP) can handle 16-megapixel cameras from both front and back cameras.

Despite this performance boost, Samsung’s smaller production method means that the new chip consumes over 30 percent less power than older chips built to the 28nm standard.
Samsung’s Exynos 7 Octa 7870 chip will go into mass production in the first quarter of 2016, so expect to see some very tasty mid-range smartphones appearing in the second half of 2016.
