Samsung’s future smartphones could run off MediaTek chips

Samsung might be springing for MediaTek chips to power future smartphones, a new report reveals.

According to CTimes, Taiwanese media has reported MediaTek is seeing some success in courting Samsung as a potential chip buyer.

Zhu Shan-gzu, deputy GM of MediaTek, said: “We made progress little by little in some direction.”

It’s not exactly a surprising revelation; Samsung is currently undergoing a big split from its dependence on US chip manufacturer Qualcomm.

In fact, Samsung actually used its own custom-built Exynos chips in its newly released flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.

MediaTek also recently showed off a new series of Helio system-on-chips, one of which – the X10 – is a high-end offering.

Typically, however, MediaTek tends to supply chips for low-end smartphones, often on handsets pricing below £150.

This could be a clue as to the deal MediaTek is hoping to strike with Samsung. The South Korean company could use its own chips for high-end devices, while padding out its low-end ranges with MediaTek fare.

The X10 could certainly make its way to a mid-to-top tier handset however, especially considering it can handle 480fps video recording and support for 120Hz displays.

Of course, these are just rumours, and no deal has actually been confirmed just yet.

We likely won’t see much in the way of official confirmation until these chips actually land in Samsung devices, however.
