Samsung’s next tablet could have a rollable OLED display with fingerprint sensor
Samsung has been granted a patent for a rollable OLED display with a built-in fingerprint scanner, hinting at the future of where its mobile devices could go.
Dug up by LetsGoDigital, the patent filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office shows a flexible OLED display that with the use of magnets can be curled up around the cylindrical ‘body’ of a main device, which looks a little like a high-tech scroll with a fingerprint sensor on its bottom.
Exactly what Samsung envisions is the use case for such a device is unclear, but it looks like the South Korean tech giant is getting in early to patent a rather unusual looking gadget.
Such a device could be used a form of tablet whereby the display size is flexible, rolling out to say eight inches for reading books or watching videos while commuting, to being stretched out to a much larger size for creative work or presentations.
While Samsung had filed patents alluding to flexible displays in that past, the claimed gadget design in this new patent is pretty detached from previous designs it has patented.
There’s a chance that more could be revealed at CES 2018 in the coming weeks, but we doubt there’ll be such a gadget making an appearance in any form beyond a prototype version, So widely available rollable displays are still likely some years away.
Nevertheless, Samsung is sure to showcase some interesting tech at CES 2018, potentially the rumoured Galaxy X and could reveal or at least tease the Galaxy S9.
