Samsung Readies Flashy 2.5in SSDs

Still no RRP though...

I have to say I’m getting a little tired of endless SSD announcements and no hard retail follow-up (who isn’t?) but Samsung’s latest certainly looks consumer ready…

The big news here is that Sammy has come up with 64GB 1.8in and 2.5in solid state hard disks with SATA II (3Gbps) connectors – given that PATA has (bizarrely dominated early offerings) – which makes them ready for mass market modern machines.

Unsurprisingly, on the back of this Samsung has announced that the pair are also its fastest to date, combining a 50nm-class single-level-cell (SLC) 8Gb flash chip with a proprietary, high-speed SATA controller and supporting software. The result is sequential write speeds of 100 megabytes per second (MBps) and sequential read speeds of 120MBps. HDDs look out!

Of course other benefits are typical of SSD: they both use less than half the typical 1.9 watts consumed by typical moving parts hard drives, are far lighter (the 2.5 incher is just 73g), have greater strength (withstanding up to 20G of vibration) and silent operation.

So clearly Samsung is once more talking the talk, but again the walk is lacking since there is no formal release date or pricing. Enough! We want these in mass production, on shelves and in our laptops ”’now!”’

”’Update:”’ Superhero reader Paul has spotted the drives for pre-order at Scan. Sadly there is no launch date listed while the RRP is £568.11 including VAT. Bet you wish you didn’t know now… :S
