Samsung Preps Another iPhone Killer

In the footsteps of the F700 and F490 comes the i900...

Will Apple regret not offering a 3G iPhone at MacWorld? Clearly, Samsung thinks so…

Cellularmania has got the scoop on the ‘i900’, a Windows Mobile 6.1 based handset which really aims to show up the well-publicised shortcomings in Apple’s nonetheless hugely impressive debut handset.

Externally (if you can see through the brutal watermarks), the i900 has one obvious influence and matches its ‘inspiration’ with a 3.5in touchscreen display though slightly smaller 400 x 240 pixel resolution. From here it is all good news however with a five megapixel autofocus camera, 8GB of onboard memory ”and” microSD slot, audio and video playback, FM tuner, TV output and the Opera 9.0 web browser.

Being Windows Media based, the i900 is also a full-on smartphone and – intriguingly – has a heavily customised finger friendly interface. At 112 x 56 x 12.5mm the i900 is also virtually as compact as you-know-who and given that it is likely to be highly subsidised on monthly contracts it could provide real competition to iPhone and highly popular LG Viewty.

Sadly no release timeframe was mentioned, but more than anything to date this is the handset which will have Steve Jobs’ nervously fiddling with his polo neck.
