Samsung Preps 8MP, GPS, DivX, 16GB Smartphone

Eight is certainly the new five...

With the iPhone 3G now on the loose and opinion divided as to whether it is quite the upgrade we had all prayed for one manufacturer is keen to demonstrate ”all” its shortcomings…

Unsurprisingly, it is Samsung who has picked up this batten and with the leaked ‘i8510’ it could have a very good case indeed. Let’s break it down:

*S60 3rd Edition OS

*7.2Mbit HSDPA

*8 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash

*120 frames per second video recording in QVGA

*Bluetooth 2.0

*FM tuner

*16GB onboard storage

*3.5mm headphone jack

*microSD expansion slot

*multimedia playback including DivX

*280 hours standby, six hours talk time

*Slim dimensions of 106.5 x 53.9 x 16.9mm

Oh yeah – this handset means business.

Of course its slider format arguably makes the i8510 more of a competitor for the still unreleased Nokia N96 and on these stats it looks a battle Samsung’s latest is more than capable of winning – even if, naturally enough, the OS still requires some spit and polish at this stage.

Pricing? Availability? Don’t be daft. We’re still waiting for more proof this uber phone even exists – but if indeed it does, then the smartphone world is facing one heck of a shake up…
