Still far too expensive to actually sell, though.
We’ve already seen a 40in Samsung OLED TV (pictured), but that’s not good enough. Speaking to What HiFi, Samsung’s Vice President in charge of Flat Panel Development, HS Kim teased the possibility of Samsung showing off a 50in OLED set at CES in January, although he made no promises and, in fact, rather played down the significance of OLED, at least right now.
“We can make larger displays,” commended Kim, “and we may demonstrate a 50in OLED TV at the CES show in January, though we haven’t decided yet. Of course showing such a TV and actually bringing it to market is a different matter, Kim asking “how much more would you be willing to pay for such a set? I’m sure that if we marketed such a set at ten times the price of current LCD TVs, which is what it would be now, no-one would buy it.”
Indeed, Kim further suggests that some of the major benefits of OLED are quickly being diminished by current LCD technology, anyway. For example, while an OLED panel itself can be 3mm thin, the TV still pushes up to 25mm thickness, which Samsung is close to achieving with LCD technology. Power draw, too, previously touted as an advantage of OLED is becoming rapidly less so. Kim commenting that while “an OLED TV will consume around 50W; we’re near to that with next year’s 40in LCDs.”
Indeed, Kim’s opinion is that: “OLED has a long way to go, technology-wise and cost-wise. It’s coming, but we just don’t know when it will be a viable consumer product.”
OLED is coming, the massive investments being made by manufacturers such as Sony will ensure that. Just don’t hold your breath over seeing any commercially available OLED TVs any time soon.
