Samsung Pay on a fridge? World’s techiest appliance set for upgrade

There’s nothing we love more than a lavish, tech-filled refrigerator and Samsung’s reassuringly expensive Family Hub is up there with the best of ‘em.

The $5,600 appliance bakes a gigantic touchscreen tablet into the door that features to calendar, notes and photos and there are even three cameras that allow you to check on your supplies via a smartphone app while out shopping.

However, arguably the most convenient feature allows families to add items to shopping lists and place grocery orders. That functionality is reportedly about to get better with the addition of the Samsung Pay mobile payments platform.

According to ETNews in Samsung’s Korean homeland (via SamMobile), Family Hub owners will be able to pay for their orders with the same tech deployed on newer Galaxy phones and Gear watches.

Naturally the rollout is expected in South Korea first, the report says, where all of the nation’s big three supermarket chains are on board.

However, with Family Hub now available in the UK, Europe and the United States, perhaps we can expect a wider roll out.

The Family Hub also offers access to recipes, cooking timers, TV mirroring, a whiteboard, weather updates and will play music from services likes TuneIn.

While such a proposition could tempt some homeowners into taking the plunge, the Family Hub isn’t the only super-fridge vying for our attention.

As IFA 2016, LG introduced the rival ‘Smart Fridge’ which features Windows 10 and a Knock-On Instaview feature that enables users to see what’s behind those heavy doors without sacrificing heat energy by opening the door.
