Samsung patents smartphone with widescreen 21:9 display

Samsung’s endless bid to launch smartphones with all possible screen sizes looks set to continue as the Korean manufacturer patents a handset with a widescreen 21:9 display.

The cinema-style aspect ratio, which would presumably give the hosting handset a multimedia-centric ilk, is a step beyond the standard 16:9 aspect used on most high-end handsets, including the the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Although concrete details on the patented handset are sparse, the phone’s 21:9 aspect ratio has been highlighted in a range of sketches which accompanied the listing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

As well as showing off the unusual screen ratio, the patent has revealed that the as yet unconfirmed phone will play host to a flash accompanied rear-mounted camera and, by the looks of things, a large rear-mounted speaker.

A move that would further aid the phone’s multimedia capabilities, the large speaker grill is shown circling the full rear edge of the sizeable phone.

The lack of a physical home button means that the movie-friendly screen would be better centralised when the device is in a landscape stance.

While the 21:9 screen ratio has been teased, the patent, which was first filed back on July 30, 2012, has offered no more precise details on screen resolutions or sizes.

Although a handset which would be sure to stand out from the masses, this patented Samsung device would not be the first smartphone to run a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Back in 2009 rival Korean manufacturer LG launched the LG BL40 New Chocolate, a 4.01-inch handset with an 800 x 345 pixel resolution and bizarre, stretched appearance.

There is currently no word on an expected launch window or naming of the leaked Samsung phone.
