There’s a saying “Better late than never”, even if you’re really ”really” late…
After eons of producing (increasingly decent) MP3 players Samsung has announced it is finally launching its own online digital music store. Called – ingeniously – ‘Samsung Media Studio’ it will go live next month with 2.6m tracks available from day one.
As expected, Samsung has made a concerted effort to undercut Apple’s ubiquitous iTunes by offering individual tracks from just 79p while albums will also be provided as well as unlimited downloads for a £15 monthly subscription.
The launch will coincide with the release of Sammy’s latest pair of players: the K3 – a speaker-less K5 of ultra slinky proportions – and the ‘T9B’, a Bluetooth version of the D600 style influenced T9. All Sammy players will now ship with a seven day free trial of the Media Studio.
Interestingly, Samsung says it will allow users to burn their downloaded tracks to CD as well as transfer them to their MP3 players though it wasn’t made clear whether other branded players will be able to access the store.
So has Sammy missed the boat on this one? It is a point of regular debate whether it is the iPod or iTunes which has brought such success to Apple, I’d suggest if Samsung lingers any hopes of replicating the white fetishist it needs to get both right…
”’Update:”’ Sammy has just been onto all journos to tell them the name is ‘Media Studio’ not Music Store (hence the corrections) – bit of a multinational slip that! We also now know the service will be an application based programme that sits at a local level on a users’ PC and that it will use Playforsure DRM so other branded players will be compatible (though not the iPod). We’ll see it February for sure.
