Samsung Launches Budget Qwerty Handset

Perfect for T9 phobics...

While the growing popularity of smartphones is undeniable a new market for smart-”ish” models seems to be taking off too…

Coming in a very similar vein to LG’s KS350, Samsung has unveiled the ‘Messenger’ a budget handset with full sliding Qwerty keyboard aimed at pleasing the IM and SMS crowd.

Designed to be slightly more portable than LG’s offering, the Messenger has a reduced 2.1in LCD and lower end 1.3MP camera but will no doubt win admirers for equipping the exterior with a standard keypad. Multimedia functionality however isn’t great with only MP3 playback listed and no word on video while the 20MB of native memory means you’ll certainly need to take advantage of the memory expansion slot.

Like the KS360, 3G and GPS aren’t on the menu so don’t expect a great browsing experience (Samsung handsets tend to fall down in this aspect anyway) but Bluetooth and a USB port are aboard.

On the bright side, the Messenger won’t cost you anything on any decent sized contract and it is a prime candidate for PAYG too. Lastly, with an immediate US release announced we shouldn’t have to wait long…
