Samsung’s non-too-shabby R700 has received an update, turning it into the R720 and upping its specs. It’s not a revolutionary overhaul, but the R700 didn’t really need one anyway.
A 17.3in screen size with a 16:9 aspect ratio is present and, though resolution isn’t specified, a 1,920 x 1,080 option seem likely – though it’s not going to be standard given the laptop’s price point. The system is Centrino 2-based, thus coming with Core 2 Duo processors; which is hardly surprising and graphics come courtesy an AMD ATI Radeon 4650. Four USB ports are present, one of which can be powered with the laptop turned off, in addition to a USB/eSATA combination port.
The R720’s keyboard is described as ‘full sized’ – whatever that means – and comes complete with an anti-bacterial coating. A DVD drive comes as standard, but a Blu-ray drive option is available. Two 2W speakers are present, and Samsung says the R720 will provide virtual 5.1-channel surround sound through headphones.
The base model will cost a mere £599 once available from July, though higher specced systems will obviously up the price.
