Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini: Specs, release date and latest rumours
Could the Galaxy S9 be about to get a smaller, mid-range sibling? Samsung has been heavily tipped to be working on a miniature, cheaper version of its flagship, and more and more information appears to be leaking. We take a look at the latest news and rumours, as well as speculating on a potential Galaxy S9 Mini release date.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini Latest News: New benchmarks leak
Benchmark results for a handset with the codename ‘SM-G8850’, which is believed to be the Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini, have reportedly appeared on AnTuTu.
Android Headlines reports that the device will run Android 8.0 Oreo, as you’d expect for a new 2018 phone not named the iPhone, and feature 64GB of internal storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, and 4GB of RAM. So far, so so-so.
The size of its screen is as yet unknown, but the leak suggests that it will boast a 2220 x 1080 resolution. For context, the regular S9 has a 5.8-inch display, and the S9+ uses a 6.2-inch screen.
However, this isn’t the first time that specs for a mysterious Samsung handset have appeared online. A Geekbench listing from April 2 shows a Samsung device with the model number ‘SM-G8750’, which has Android 8.0 Oreo on-board, as well as a Snapdragon 660 SoC with 4GB of RAM.
Previous S9 Mini rumours have suggested such a device would feature a more modest 5-inch screen, but one that still comes equipped with Samsung’s gorgeous edge-to-edge display design. This is still all hugely speculative stuff, though.
Samsung hasn’t released an S-series Mini device since the Galaxy S5 Mini way back in 2014, instead opting to use its A-series phones to offer a smaller form factor with mid-range internals and – crucially – a much cheaper price point.
Still, we wouldn’t care to rule out a Galaxy S9 Mini just yet, so here’s when one could be released.
Galaxy S9 Mini Release Date: When might the Galaxy S9 Mini come out?
There are a few possibilities when it comes to a Galaxy S9 Mini release date.
Samsung’s next high-profile mobile launch event is likely to be held around IFA in Berlin this autumn – the European trade show usually bleeds over from August into September. The Galaxy Note 9 will almost certainly take centre stage there, but that’s not to say a new mid-range device couldn’t also feature.
Beyond that, there’s every chance Samsung could dissect its usual MWC and IFA gatherings with a summer 2018 #SamsungUnpacked event. The last S-series Mini device (the aforementioned S5 Mini) was revealed in July 2014, and that would provide a nice bit of space between the South Korean chaebol’s two flagship launches of the year.
Or it might not happen at all.
In truth, this is probably the most likely eventuality. As we’ve said, Samsung has essentially re-homed its S-series Mini handsets in the A-series, and crucially it too carries the Galaxy moniker – witness the excellent Galaxy A5, which is an S8 Mini in all but name.
This means the’G’ model number referenced in the Geekbench listing could allude to a number of handsets and shouldn’t be taken as proof of the existence of an S9 Mini.
That’s all we know for now, but stay tuned as we’ll update this article with any new information as and when it becomes available.
